Chambers oven pilot and Safety system

Hi Folks, I have been gathering information and parts in order to come up with a more modern and hopefully less expensive system for lighting the oven and providing a gas safety valve for our old ranges.

I've been looking at Hot Surface Ignition(Glowbar) or Electronic Spark Ignition.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on these systems?

I'll give my limited two cents, though I'm not sure it will be much help... However,I would definitely be interested in a system that doesn't break the bank to purchase.
I've never heard of the glow bar system, so no comment there, sorry.
I like the idea of an electronic ignition. I've considered that for the top burners as well if possible since the surface stays cool. However, I've never actually owned a stove with this set-up, just my BBQ, so I don't know of any long term issues (less reliable?).
Well, I guess it's only one cent worth!

Sorry, Stoveman, that I can't give you any technical feedback, but can say that if you create such a device, I will be first in line to buy one. That's one of the only things I like about the modern stoves - the fact that there's no gas running and no pilot burning all the time.

Any idea when you might have a prototype ready?

Dumb question. Do you need and outside source of electricity to power the safety systems? Part of the reason I own a Chambers is because of New England winter power outages! Also, which one would be most likely to pass current codes?
Our "Patriot Red Chambers" (should be freedom red, but we won right?) is installed and running and cooking great! Don't know how we did without one!

Here's what I'm trying to put together:

The GLOWBAR system consists of 3 parts and some tubing. (1) Glow bar (mounts on oven burner to light the flame).(2) Gas Valve (turns gas on when glowbar is hot).(3) Electrical switch to activate system.

OR

The ELECTRONIC system Consists of 5 parts and some tubing (1) The Ignitor (lights the pilot and senses flame). (2)Electronic module ( provides spark and controls gas valve) (3) Gas valve (turns on/off gas to oven and pilot) (4) Electrical switch ( Turns system on/off). (5) Power transformer (provides 24 volt power to system)

The Glowbar is 1980's technology, but still being used.

The Electronic is current technology.

The Glowbar system was used on Kichenaid ovens while Chambers and Kitchenaid were the same company in Oxford, Mississippi. So it has a Chambers heritage, but the parts are getting hard to find.

Did anything ever become of this? I'd be interested in a spark/electric ignition and safety system. Seems like the simplest way to go.

hi sam,
i played around with a coil ignitor (glow bar) setup using parts from an old kitchenaid i had.
also tried electronic ignition for the surface burners with some salvaged parts.
both got the job done but it wasnt easy to set up on the wedgewood i was working on. the problem i ran into was completing the circuit from the oven thermostat and burner valves to the ignitor and gas valve (using the original controls). newer stoves have the switch mechanism inside the thermostat and burner valves. i ended up mounting 3 amp micro switches to the existing contols that complete the circuit when the valve stem turns. i ran the burner cuircut thru a standard ignition module and the coil ignitor thru a simple junction connector. the household electric runs thru a step down transformer, 120v to 24v.
maybe i over designed it and there's an easier way. [img]smile.gif[/img]
i used parts i had lying around. i checked some prices online; the ignitor was $75 and the ignition module was $98, gas valve was $60.
i have some used parts lying around somewhere, you can have them if you want. let me know.
